To Stay or To Flee (June 2002) Ginna Wilcoxen and Debbie Silverberg Octavia left the ship and wondered if coming back was the right thing to do. The way Master Du'Sau looked at her gave her the shivers. She knew in her eyes she was guilty and there was nothing she could do to change her mind. Go meditate, wasn't that what Master D'med said? Meditate on what? Her feelings? Or her decision to be a Jedi? Ignoring looks from other students, Octavia headed toward her quarters in silence. Her thoughts whirled. 'The Jedi protect no one but themselves.' Xanatos' words came to mind. Entering her quarters Octavia removed her cloak and sat down in a chair. 'If you want a place, you know you will always have one here.' Roc's last words echoed in her mind. Octavia rose and threw her lightsaber across the room. "THIS is ridiculous!" she yelled "Anger will do nothing but condemn you." A voice said calmly. Octavia whirled and looked at the ghostly image of Qui-Gon. "That's easy for you to say. YOU'RE DEAD!" "Child, you are at a dangerous time in your life. You have to control your emotions." Qui-Gon spoke softly. "I wouldn't be in this situation if it wasn't for the dreams.. DREAMS of your death, and you fighting Darth Maul." Octavia walked over to him. "WHY?" she questioned. "Why lead me to this point only to say no you're not good enough." "You haven't failed. You are only confused." Qui-Gon said quietly. "You have to look at your accomplishments and be patient." Octavia sat down and placed her head in hands. "I failed." "You did what you thought was right." Qui-Gon sat next to her. "No one can fault you for that." "Master Du'Sau does, I can see it in her eyes." "Are you guilty?" Qui-Gon asked. Octavia shook her head. "I don't know. I really don't know." She answered. "Octavia, you can be taught many things, but confidence is something you learn. You need to trust the force. Your father did and his actions saved you from being found out." "I cannot live up to your legend. I'm not you." Qui-Gon smiled. "I wouldn't expect you to." He paused. "You just have to be you. Trust your instincts Octavia. You think too much of the future, keep your focus on the here and now. You must be mindful of the living Force." "Do you believe it was wrong to give my word to Psylocke?" Qui-Gon lowered his head for a brief instance. "No, but I don't think you thought your actions through. You did not weigh the different out comes." "I â^À¦ You're right I didn't weight the cost or the reactions." "That is what it means to be a Jedi Octavia, what will your actions do, will it serve the better good?" he paused. "Many Jedi who act first have learned from their lessons." "I did act rashly," Octavia stated realizing what she had done, and instead of helping she could have ended up making it worse or getting herself killed. "Yes, you did." Qui-Gon answered. "The question is how are you going to face this rash action?" Octavia looked at him. "By taking responsibility for my actions." She answered. "And if the council decides against you?" Qui-Gon asked. "Respect their decision," Octavia replied. "But that doesn't change what I've learned or who I am or what I will do to oppose the Empire." Qui-Gon nodded. "No one can ever take that from you. You have come a long way, but it is up to you how much further you do go." "I do not want to be treated differently just because I'm your granddaughter." "I do not believe that the council will." Qui-Gon replied standing. "You have to be sure of yourself Octavia, and your reasons. If you are honest and truthful then you have nothing to fear." He stood before her. "Disregard what Xanatos has told you, he is bitter just like Master D'med has told you." "He hates you for what you did." Qui-Gon lowered his head briefly. "True, and that cannot be changed, but you do not have to let him dictate your life or live in fear of him." "He will attack any that I care for." "That is his way, he is not invisible Octavia." Qui-Gon smiled. "Unless you give him that power over you. I can only offer you advise, I cannot tell you how to act or believe." Octavia watched as Qui-Gon faded from sight then sat on the floor and began to mediate. She knew the council would call her soon. She cleared her mind and reached out for the force.
