The World of Science and Technology

A Theme-based, Study-skills Approach

Frances Luttikhuizen

A theme-based, study-skills reading text for students of English as a second language.

The World of Science and Technology is designed for intermediate-level EFL students who are already comfortable with common English sentence patterns, but who need practice using language within the specific context of academic discourse. While reading is an essential part of this text, the varied and stimulating reading passages are not intended for structural analysis or detailed vocabulary work, but for concept development. Traditional direct-recall-type comprehension questions have been replaced with skimming, scanning, matching, and outlining activities. The study skills practiced are those that the students will need to establish a working knowledge of the art of communication in the English-speaking academic world---including classifying, comparing, predicting, identifying cause and effect, inferring, hypothesizing, and outlining. A listening section involving mini-lectures on unit-related subjects is also provided since most students spend their academic lives gleaning new information through listening to lectures.

Regardless of their major, college-prep students need to develop their reading strategies and study skills. The World of Science and Technology is designed for students who are either planning to enter or have just entered college. In addition to post-secondary students pursuing scientific or technological majors, this interactive, theme-based approach covers much of the same subject matter as most core college-level reading courses.

Frances Luttikhuizen is Head of the Foreign Language (English) Department of Spain's secondary school system, Assistant Professor of Technical English, Universitat de Barcelona; and area co-coordinator for the teacher's training program, Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona.
