That was the opening monologue from the Pirates of Dark Water cartoon series. The above words pretty much summarize the entire plot of the show. It aired for only 21 episodes back in the mid- to late-1980's. When it went off the air, Ren and his friends had only recovered half of the Thirteen Treasures. Despite the admittedly cheesy-sounding dialogue, I thought it was an excellent cartoon show. (Especially since it was created by an American company. We all know how bad the American cartoons were back then!) I missed the show when it went off the air. I've only been able to find the show again once - back in the early 1990's when the Cartoon Network was running it for a time. However, that brief run wasn't enough for me; I wanted to find some way to recapture the magic I once found in the show.
Finally, I think I've done so. (At least, it's a damn good try.) Currently, my gaming group is taking a break from our normal Planescape campaign. To give ourselves a "rest" from all of the intense politics and philosophy and the like, we're going with "brain candy" role-playing. We are now engaging in a "standard" AD&D campaign set in the world of the Pirates of Dark Water cartoon series. I've managed to take all of the notes I took during Cartoon Network's rerun of the series and turn them into something resembling a coherent setting. These web pages will be a place to share this information with both my players and the rest of the Web-capable world.
The bulk of the information on these pages is contained in the "Player's Guide" that I created. The rest of the info here will be outlines of the characters created for the game, as well as the numerous stories that have been written for the campaign. This time around, at least half of the stories will be from the DM; I've changed the format of the game session slightly to start with the reading of some text to help give the effect that the game sessions are the stories being told by an ancient bard. (Don't laugh. The Al-Qadim setting did pretty well with this format for its modules and my players are enjoying the change.)
