"Stabbing Eastward"
by Ken Lipka 2000

"...and so, as you can see, our heroes were actually saved by the sudden appearance of Bloth and the Maelstrom. The reason for this is that although Evil hates Good, it hates other Evil even more. The hatred that Admiral Kriton and Bloth held for each other blinded them to the presence of the tiny Reef Runner. In following battle, which raged across two seas and several days, our heroes were able to take their second Treasure of Rul out from under the very noses of those who would steal them for evil purposes. With the artifact safely in hand, our heroes left the two pirate lords to their conflict, hoping that the seas would swallow them both."

At the end of the song, the crowd is quick to show its appreciation of both the storyteller and her subjects. The gathered audience had its expectations of what a proper heroic epic should be like, and the old rawun had yet to disappoint them - a rather surprising detail when one considers that all the stories she had been telling are supposed to be true ones.

The old bard allows the crowd to settle in its time, using the noisy interlude to take a drink, catch her breath, and renew her spells. The gathered residents of Kinja soon follow suit and order their own refills of food and drink. "Brisk business this night," she thinks to herself. "I hope my coral-headed sons remembered to stock up properly this time 'round." Once all have been served, the storyteller again raises her voice and begins to draw the attentive fish of her audience back into the nets of her tales.

"My friends, I thank you once more for sitting here and listening to my telling of things that you did not realize you already knew. I am certain you know the course my next song will steer - towards the recovery of a third Treasure. After all, they have escaped certain doom yet again to resume the Great Quest of Ren and Primus. But where would they find the next piece of the puzzle to save Mer? Following the clues in the Ancient Tome, our heroes discovered that a Treasure might be found to the east of the Steaming Isles and the dangerous waters of Serpent's Coil. But their next destination could very well prove to be even more perilous - the accursed Terrapin Island. It is a place where echoes of the past are remembered by more than old bards, they are remembered by themselves. The only way to fight the past is with the past."

"Sit back and listen now to my words as I sing of the voyages of the Reef Runner and her crew..."
