"Two Shall Vie"
by Ken Lipka 2000

"... and thus was Captain Yamalla able to recruit a legion of genies who bent the laws of time and space to allow the crew of the Reef Runner to reclaim the thirteenth treasure and restore it to its rightful place in the Great Lighthouse of Octopon before either the Dark Dweller or Bloth's evil pirates could lift a finger to stop them."

Again, as all the times before, the fading of the last notes of the rawun's song were lost in the rising applause from the gathered citizens of Kinja. The old bard had promised the town a night of stories without equal, and she had not broken her promise. For not only were the songs and tales exciting, full of suspense and adventure, they were also true. And are not true tales better than histories that have been twisted and changed to suit some personal quest by those who tell them?

However, this time, the applause was not quite as thunderous or as long lasting. While part of this seeming lessened response could be due to the time - after all, the first rays of dawn are beginning to touch the oceans - it is mostly due to anticipation. The Thirteen Treasures have been recovered from their ancient resting places; their magic has restored Octopon to its once and future glory. There is but one tale left to be told by the old bard: the one which chronicles how the world of Mer had been forever saved from the evil of the Dark Dweller and his creation, Dark Water. If all of these tales had been this exciting, how glorious would the tale of the finale be?

Being the veteran performer that she is, the elderly storyteller senses this anticipation in her audience. She sighs and gathers her fading strength, ready to tell her last story. She renews her spell, and once more has her voice carried to the far corners of the room. "I thank you for your patience, my friends. I know you can sense the wind shifting. It is true - we have crossed the horizon and our port of call is before us. My time here is nearly finished. I have but one more tale to tell before I leave you. It is the one that I hinted at when I began this Story Night. It is also the one foretold by the ancient prophecy of Rul. Now I will sing about the defeat of the Dark Dweller."

"The death of this foul godling truly was one worthy of the tale I sing. All the pieces of the Grand Quest were gathered for the final battle. King Ren and his friends had joined forces with Captain Yamalla and the crew of the Reef Runner. They used the legendary Wraith - yes, the same flagship of the royal navy - that had been shrouded in Yamalla's genie magic and sailed into the very heart of the Dark Dweller's domain. Once there, the two crews brought the Thirteen Treasures into the evil god's innermost sanctum. But the Dark Dweller knew they were coming and had brought allies of his own. As evil ever calls out to evil, so too did the ancient foe of life on Mer call out. And his call was answered."

"For waiting for our heroes was the evil pirate lord Bloth and his crew. This small army, backed up by a tidal wave of Dark Water, was prepared and attacked the small band of our heroes. Although the outcome is certain, the path to it might not be the one you think. The last tale I tell is of the final, epic battle between the forces of Good and the forces of Evil. The battle for the future of Mer."

"Sit back and listen now to my words as I sing of the voyages of the Reef Runner and her crew..."
