Old for New is a store located in the Guildhall Ward, about one block from the Trioptic Nic'Epona.
This business resides in a building that only a Doomguard could truly appreciate. It is a large, blocky, two-story building prominiently located on a corner one block down the same street that leads to the Trioptic Nic'Epona. The skeleton of the building is a of worn, chipped, greenish-gray stone. This framework is scaberously fleshed out with rotting wood, broken glass, and rusting metal. The main entrance to the business is, rather incongruously, a seemingly brand-new, highly polished brass door. Inside, the dichotomy between new and old is maintained in another striking fashion.
As a customer enters, he is greeted with a study in contrast and balance. To the left of the patron, the interior of the hall is pristine and brand new. Clean white marble lines the floor, and the walls are panelled with dark wood. Several recently cleaned oil lamps provide ample light to allow one to easily examine the merchandise. Said goods are neatly hung on racks, set on shelves, or stacked in bins. The left side of the hall is a mirror image of the right; but it is a dark mirror. The floor is dirty and cracked, while the walls are rotted and peeling. The oil lamps are dented, tarnished and empty - a few measly torches provide barely enough light to avoid tripping on the uneven flagstones. The racks, shelves and bins are all damaged or incomplete, and the goods on them are simply dropped or thrown there haphazardly.
Equally dramatic is the quality of the goods available on each side of the room. One side contains products that are as brand new as one half of the room; the other side contains decayed and damaged objects which are the equal to the other half of the establishment. One might expect this, but not in the locations that the goods are. For it is the old items that are neatly stored on the new side of the room, and it is the new goods which are discarded so carelessly within the rotting side.
This odd product selection represents the true nature of Old for New - it is a store which is founded on the purpose of serving the Doomguard faction. Here, the entropic factioneers of the Sinkers may come to trade-in any "disgusting" new and undamaged items for more suitably decayed ones.
This store is a prime example of how one faction feeds off of another. Old for New is owned and run by a member of the Fated, for the express purpose of making money off of the Doomguard's love of all things touched by Entropy. A Doomguard (or anyone else for that matter) may come to the store with a new item, and give it to store's owner. That new item, plus a small fee, will allow the customer to pick up a decayed object of an equal or lesser value. Any sort of object may be traded or bought here - all that matters is that a patron comes in with a new object and leaves with an old one.
In game mechanics terms, a customer can trade-in an object that has 90% or more of its damage points and get an item that has 50% or less of its DP. The old item must be one that is of equal or lesser value than the new item. Example: Falcatta the Doomsoldier comes into the store with a Long Sword she's pulled off some poor sod that's just been sent to the dead-book. She can get rid of the offending item and replace it with a decayed version of anything that would cost less than 15 cages [gold]. (The addition of funds to the new item can gain an old item of greater value; the funds are obviously equal to the difference.)
The owner and proprieter of Old for New is Natran Mandok (Pl/Hu/--/LE/Fa). His only goal in life is be the best crooked merchant he can be. ("If you put a price on it, people will buy it.") He is a short, pudgy, and greasy sort of individual. His brown eyes constantly dart around - either looking for escape routes should the deal go sour, or else evaluating how much his customer is worth. In order to make himself more pleasing to his clientle, he wears frayed and moth-eaten clothing that is several decades out of date.
How can Mandok possibly hope to stay in business? It's a simple answer, really. Old for New is not his only business. Over in the Market Ward, he owns a provisioning store (Nartan's Outfitters) which allows its customers to bring in old and damaged items and trade them in - plus a small fee - for a brand new item. Obviously, Natran uses each store to supply the other; and between the pair, he manages to pull down a tidy profit.
