Thoughts on Planescape

Essentially, this page is for everything that doesn't fit anywhere else on my web site. Most of what's here has been scavenged from the Planescape Mailing List - ideas that people put out there that sounded good to me. A lot of the subject of discussion deals with "high-minded" philosophy; the why things are the way they are (or the how they could be).
Sigil's Calendar
Finally! Some of you may recall me making noise about creating such a beast about... *ahem* two years ago. Well, I've finally finished the damn thing. Hopefully, you'll think that it's worth it. (Even if you don't, Jon Winter loves it. So there!) As a word of warning, this is a fairly large document. The Word version takes up 16 pages at 10-point font. Oh yes, and bonus points to those who can correctly identify all of the in-jokes I've included.

Cliff Brannon liked my calendar so much that he created some PDF worksheets to use with it. There is a page which covers one month and another which covers three months.
Historical Cant
I'm sure you're all thinking "Oh no. Not another list of cant terms!". Well, you're mostly right. Where this list differs (or at least, seems to) from all the others is that none of the words on here are made up. All of them are from real world history and have actually been spoken for real. The list I present here contains slang from two different regions and time periods. The first is from London in the mid- to late 1700's (historical "thieves' cant"). The other is from America in the 1920's and 1930's (specifically, words used by gangsters and their ilk).
The Nature of Faith
This web page is actually a pair of articles written by Richard Gant of the PS Mailing List. The articles were written about four months apart and essentially address the same topic - what is Faith and how does it relate to Belief. I am presenting both articles together because, while they are near copies, each offers something new in and of itself.
The Forms of Powers
Another gem pulled from the mailing list. This time by that resident of Poland, Bartlomiej Walczak (aka Feniks). This reasonably long article is a very good discussion on the various types of Powers (aka gods) that exist in the Planescape setting. It also ties in fairly well with the ideas presented in the previous submission, "The Nature of Faith".
Faction Belief Map
This image is from way back in the early days of the setting and the Mailing List. A member by the handle of Randir o Ia (yes, the same one as in Feniks' "Forms of Power") got to examining the factions in depth and found similar elements here and there. Eventually, he came up with this "map", showing how (in his mind) the factions actually are all off-shoots of one another. It's a very intriguing way of looking at things. However, there are two "problems" with it. The first is that the Anarchists have been left of of the map. The second, is that since this is from the early days, it contradicts information which was later revealed in The Factol's Manifesto.
Mad Afro's Wish Theory
Another old file I found recently; but this one is not mine. I found it on the Internet back in February of 1996. A person by the handle of "Mad Afro" had written this document concerning the functioning of the various WISH spells. The key to his explanation of how a Wish works is that the spell summons sentient magical energy which attempts to do what the caster requests. Given that the character of Valas works with what is essentially living magic, this article ties in very nicely with that structure.
Alignment Guidelines
This is another article by someone on the Planescape Mailing List. I don't remember when it came across the list. What you'll find here is a collection of role-playing hints for the various alignments based on the Paladium system. The author, Brian Leybourne, has modified these hints from Paladium's original and eliminated those hints for the True Neutral alignment (as he doesn't like that alignment and thinks it's unplayable anyway).
Alignment by the Morals
In February of 1998, a recurring argument consumed the Planescape Mailing List - what is the definition of Good and Evil? Part of this argument revolved around the question of is it possible to define these terms objectively? The best response on this part was created by Alex Roberts, and then amended by Sam Weiss. This article is their posts on the matter.
