| Gramma loved birds; her houses always had plenty of feeders so that she could watch all different kinds of birds. She was a devout member of her church, First Presbyterian. She was self-concious about her weight for much of her life. She joined TOPS and later KOPS, and was very active in that for many years. She was active in the Bay City Players. At the time of her death, she was the Box Office manager; when she died, they said they needed three people to replace her. After Boppa died, she was lonely, but came to enjoy travelling. With him, she'd been limited to driving trips, since he didn't like to fly. In her last years, she flew to visit her out-of-town children and grandchildren several times, and she also went on an Alaskan cruise. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Boppa and Gramma met in a church youth group, taking 10-cents-an hour canoe rides on Belle Island in Detroit. They led a youth group together, later. The following comes from a memoir ACV wrote for a book about that youth group. "I met John VanLooy at Barb Urquhart's house at a church meeting, though I had seen him at Eastern High School. Later we dated 'on and off' for six years, and then were engaged for six months. But during that time he contracted TV (1937) and was in bed at Ford Hospital for six months. he then went home to stay in bed another six months. Oh, how the treatment for that disease has changed since then." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
