Charles Tyler is the present dead end for tracing this particular Tyler family back through the generations. We have, at present date (mid 2003) only vague ideas and speculation as to where he might have come from. From the records I personally hold and have seen, Charles first appears in Westmoreland County, VA in the 1690s buying property. In this record Charles is obviously an adult thus must have been born before or about 1670. His eldest child, a son also named Charles was married c1715 so must have been born c1695 or before, again confirming the birth year mentioned. This is about all we know for sure about Charles' derivation.
By the 1690s, Charles(Jane) Tyler, his wife Jane Unknown, and his family are to be found living in Westmoreland County, VA. In a 1714 document in Westmoreland he is noted as Richard Charles Tyler. We have seen no other document using any name but Charles so we will continue to use that given name. We do not know from where Charles came to Westmoreland or when. We know he was an adult and seemed to have considerable wealth by then. But the compiler of this article has never seen anything but speculation, and certainly no credible evidence, as to where this family came from before Westmoreland. The reader should keep in mind how very early in the history of Virginia this era is. Charles(Jane) must have been born x1660 (my designation for indicating a date within ten years of the given date). If Charles(Jane) was not an immigrant, then his father almost had to be.
We can for the record, speculate about three possible origins. A Henry Tyler came to Virginia in the mid 1600s and settled in York County, VA. Henry became the ancestor of the Charles City County, VA Tylers including the family of President John Tyler. Via another son he is the ancestor of another group that settled the New Kent-Hanover County area. The family of Henry Tyler is well documented and there is no mention at all of any Charles Tyler. Age wise Charles(Jane) would fit as one of the original Henry's sons, but the three sons of Henry, namely Henry, John and Daniel are well documented and no Charles is mentioned.
Secondly, there is some very tenuous information seen in various printed articles that the Westmoreland Tylers may have come from Maryland "with the Monroes". That theory seems logical and it makes sense that they may have come from there, but to date I have found absolutely no proof or evidence. Geographically, Westmoreland is of course only a stone's throw from Maryland across the Potomac , albeit a pretty good toss.
Probably the most prominent Maryland Tyler family is the family of Robert Jr Tyler, born 1671, who married Susanna Duvall of another prominent Maryland family. This family is extremely well documented via the Duvalls and The head of the Maryland Tylers was a Robert, evidently an immigrant, who married a Jane Reede. The records I have seen document only two children of the elder Robert, Robert Jr, already mentioned and an Elizabeth. There is no mention of a Charles Tyler.
The tradition of the Monroe connection is based on fact. The early Westmoreland Tyler family was very interconnected with the Monroe family which produced President James Monroe some years later. Christian Tyler, daughter of Charles(Jane) married a Monroe, in fact, a couple of them, and was the grandmother of the president. It is known that the Monroes came from Maryland. It seems logical that the Tylers may have come with the Monroes from Maryland but I repeat that to date I have seen not a smidgeon of proof. In Maryland deed books dated 1705 Charles Tyler witnesses some deeds in Ann Arundel County. However, note this is after he is found in Westmoreland. In summary at this date (2003) I have yet to find any sort of reference to Charles Tyler before the 1690s references in Westmoreland.
Lastly it is certainly more than possible that Charles(Jane) was an immigrant himself, although we don't know that either.
We have no record of the place or time of the birth of Charles(Jane) Tyler. We can make some educated guesses, but that is all. The children of Charles(Jane) and his wife Jane Unknown, seem to date from about 1695 through the early 1700s. No mention of any children by a previous wife is made in any of his probate records, so we can assume this was a first marriage for both Charles and Jane. If they married at a normal marriage age, it means that they were certainly born before 1670 and probably after 1650. Jane Tyler lived until at least 1730, thus a birth much before 1660 seems unlikely. My guess is that both Charles(Jane) and Jane were born sometime between 1650 and 1670.
