As early as Aug 22, 1661, Pieter Billou and Walraven Suten appeared before the council and stated, for themselves and some other persons arrived by last ship, that Staten Island suited them well, so they accordingly petitioned for an allotment of farm land, meadow, and pasture, and the laying out of house on lots there. This the council resolved to do. Teunis and Frederic were among these, so the date of arrival is established.
From court minutes of Albany:
May 18, 1663 Teunis Cornelise Swart was one of the twelve settlers whoe petitioned the West Indies company for leave to continue to cultivate their lands in Schenectady, which had been purchased and improved upon by them (upon promise not to trade with the Indians!) ... in consequence of the resolution of the company, dated June 23 1661.
So between 1661 and 1663 he had moved to Schenectady. Received a lot, and Dongan Patent of Nov 1, 1684 was issued to five trustees. Double Bouwery no. 10 was patented to Teunis C. Swart June 16, 1664, and confirmed Jan 16, 1667.
Attended funeral of the famous Jeremiah Van Rensselaer on Oct 17, 1674.
Appointed Aug 11, 1676 by Gov Andros to serve as Commissionier of Schenectady and Dependensies (with 2 other men). 3 |
