Gramma Bum (CWS) had many stories about other family members, but not so many about this branch. Mom says she thought there may have been an estrangement due to money.
At one time, the Teats family had some money and owned a nice boat (a launch). "Uncle Phil" would take his friends out for the day. They'd go out on the launch, and he would charge the fuel and supplies to his mother. So his mother sold the boat back to the Hacker Boat works in Ann Arbor, at a loss, to avoid further expenses of this sort. "Please, Mr. Hacker -- won't you buy my boat?"
Gramma used to say that Uncle Karl was "Just like Uncle Phil." -- she meant that he was charming. But Karl was always better with money.
There was an estate on the French (Campeau) side of the family which wasn't settled for years due to mismanagement. (It included a house, sold on a contract, at Crocker and Jefferson near Lake Shore Drive, visited later by Beth Wilkerson Tate).... anyway.... Grandma Lottie had a cousin who's husband was a lawyer. She and her sister paid the legal fees to finally settle the estate. Their other cousins wouldn't chip in to pay the lawyer -- but were there to get their shares when the money was handed out. Uncle Phil had signed papers with his mother saying that he wouldn't get any more from her estate -- that he'd gotten his share when she covered his bills. Maybe his children felt they didn't get their fair share? Gramma Bum got about $10,000 -- not a lot, but a nice sum at the time.
They lived in Detroit, and the cousins used to come out to visit on the streetcar. Uncle Phil's wife's parents came to visit her (mom's? Grammas?) grandma one afternoon, saying "we've helped all we can, now its your turn."
In the early 50's or late 40's, Mom remembers that they visited Uncle Phil at his cottage in Canada.7 |
