Ability to speak German and Dutch was lost with this generation. His granddaughter, Ella Gibbs, was asked in 1956 (she was then the oldest living descendant, age 90) if he spoke broken English. Her reply: "This is an entirely wrong notion you have of him, as he was a teacher in his younger days and was still in office when I remember him. He retired in his 70's sometime. The only time I ever knew he could speak German was when he was helping some German people with legal papes and translating for them. I always remember him wearing a high silk hat and he wore it to the very last. He was a very pleasant old man and patient with us children, although he used to threaten us with his cane once in a while."
Arrived in Macomb Co, MI 1837. "Registeror" of Deeds for two terms.

After the death of his wife, Henry lived with son Jacob and in 1880, he moved with them to Hope, KS. He died and was buried there that same year.3 |
